9:00 – 12:00 The Primal Power Method
Gary Collins of New American Nutrition will talk about his book and approach to Primal living, The Primal Power Method. Find out what this former FDA investigator has learned about food and health and his approach to transitioning into the Primal lifestyle. The Primal Power Method according to Gary:

“I feel it’s important to strive for what is realistic rather than idealistic. In this spirit, the Primal Power Method follows five truth-based, real-world principles designed to keep you on track. These form the practical foundation of the Method:

  1. Knowledge is power
  2. Avoid extremes
  3. Keep it simple
  4. Something is better than nothing
  5. Take action today and every day

At the core of the Primal Power Method, and of course that is why it is one of the principles, is to keep it simple and easy for everyone to understand. I know that during my journey for optimal health I found the information to be very confusing and fragmented at times.”

1:00 – 1:45 Taking care of your skin and your body

Gary Collins
New American Nutrition:

Collins Bio Pic“During my career I investigated a broad spectrum of health care providers, from purveyors of back room “miracle” cures to the most respected of medical doctors (some of whom were doing very unrespectable things). To say that some of the activities that even “top” doctors are up to are shocking would be an understatement. Let’s just say these insider experiences quickly convinced me of the importance of taking preventative wellness measures to avoid the need for later medical “care.”

Fortunately, my investigations also involved many wellness-focused, non-MD professionals. So oddly enough, it was my role with the FDA that introduced me to the concepts of natural eating and healing. Now, there are certainly a lot of nefarious snake-oil sellers out there, don’t get me wrong. But there were also many reputable wellness-based professionals with alternative healing approaches that helped me rethink what I thought I knew about being “fit.”

It was then that I realized that my skills as an investigator could be used to finally find the missing link between popular fitness programs and natural healing, the “X” factor needed to really lose weight and be healthy in the long term… and within the broken systems of today’s food supplies and healthcare.

Thus the seeds of the Primal Power Method were sown. In my spare time I began my study of wellness and holistic healing in earnest.

It was, for a while, a dual life. By day I investigated dietary supplement fraud for the FDA, by night I studied the benefits of genuine, high-quality supplements. At work I saw how a misguided public is duped by the food industry, corporate marketing and even the government. So I used my professional skills as an investigator to scour medical journals and scientific research to find the missing piece in the nation’s wellness equation.

The questionable practices I witnessed in my previous FDA work inspired me to found New American Nutrition and create the Factor X program. Now, instead of quietly documenting all that goes wrong with our nation’s food and supplement supplies, I am proactive and talk about health and the positive aspects of quality supplements.

Instead of relying on muzzled investigators of a federal agency, I want everyday Joes and Janes to make informed decisions based on information that has, until now, been routinely hidden from public view.

My new mission in life is to bring such information to light. This is at the core of New American Nutrition and the Primal Power Method.”

Book Poster jpgThe Primal Power Method is clearly a primal-based approach. Additionally, it includes the stance that everyone is physiologically different and therefore has unique dietary requirements. There are no one-size-fits-all answers.

Every “expert” book seems to have a different way of addressing […] personal dietary sensitivities. It gets very confusing, and it doesn’t have to be. The Primal Power Method recognizes that what works for one person may not work for everyone, and that solving digestive challenges is not likely to be a one-step fix.”

Sarah Servold

servold0065“Sarah Servold is the co-owner of Pete’s Paleo and founder of real., an all natural skin product line. Sarah discovered Paleo around the same time she met her husband Peter. Luckily for her, Peter was a chef and she quickly convinced him to go to CrossFit with her and give up grits and gnocchi for this crazy Paleo lifestyle. One thing led to another and Pete’s Paleo was born. Sarah not only lost about 20lbs, but she soon discovered the deeper benefits of eating Paleo, many of which affected her personally. She was able to go off all of her prescription sleep and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome medications, as well as a slew of OTC stomach/digestion medications. Issues that she had been dealing with for decades disappeared in a matter of months.
Photo Jun 08, 8 38 13 PMFeeling pretty high on life, Sarah thought she was at the pinnacle of health, eating clean and working out, but the one big slap in the face she was waiting for, concerned all her beauty and skin care products. Despite a clean diet, she was still introducing toxic substances into her body via her skin care products. Sarah adjusted her habits once again and was so passionate about it, she started real. to help others have access to clean skin care products. You can find out more about Pete’s Paleo and real. at and”

Paleo Treats

paleo_treats_owners” Originally from the East Coast, I came out to San Diego for work and never really left.  I’ve had jobs ranging from soldier to boat cleaner to builder to notary.  I’ve tried out a bunch of different diets and health ideas from acupuncture to NAET to electro-therapy, all with varying degrees of success.  In 2006 I cured myself of dog allergies after 29 years of living in fear of dogs. In 2009 my wife Lee, my friend Dave and I started the company I currently run called Paleo Treats.
paleo-magazine-affiliate-adDave moved out from the East Coast in the spring of 2009, bringing with him a truck load of household goods, a Dutch Shepherd named Draco, and the Paleo diet idea.  Dave moved in for what was going to be a short 2 week stay and ended up living with us for 6 months, radically changing our lives in the process through the introduction of the Paleo diet.  The three of us started Paleo Treats after a few weeks of Lee & I eating Paleo because we were damned if we were never going to eat dessert again and in 2009 there was not much for Paleo dessert.
Paleo/primal business: Paleo Treats™.  We sell paleo treats, cookies, and chocolate bars to folks who follow the Paleo diet.”

Courtney Kimpo
CrossFit Elysium

858919_537862186258480_784231519_o“My yoga practice began seven years ago when my husband Anthony, on our first Christmas together, gave me a gift certificate to a prominent yoga studio. I was so nervous to attend a “real” yoga class at a “real” studio that it took me three months to get up the nerve to try my first class. I had no idea what to expect, but by the end of class I was blown away. I have been teaching yoga for five years now.
I experienced that same nervousness three and a half years ago when CrossFit Elysium opened. I had no idea what to expect but had to go in to see what it was all about. I left exhilarated and pumped up beyond belief! I couldn’t wait to tell Anthony everything that happened so we could start fundamentals the next day. I am forever grateful for making those two decisions in my life.
191409_185642831480419_3171360_oCrossFit and yoga worked together beautifully. As I developed more strength I found myself holding more challenging yoga poses, my long time breathing and meditation practice made it easier for me to endure more challenging WOD’s.  I had the ability to be steadfast without mentally or physically collapsing on the floor in either modalities.  But where there are bigger muscles, there is a greater need for elasticity and I learned quickly that I must respect and abide by a great balance between my CrossFit training and my yoga practice.”

Diane Hawkins
Stix N Bones

stix“I started this little business with my daughter, Becky Whitebread.  I started researching cosmetic and medicinal products that were all natural about 3 years ago when my husband developed skin cancer on his face.  The dermatologist sent him home with some cream and told him to make sure that he always put a lot of sunscreen on his face and exposed limbs.  Needless to say he got worse!  I started looking into the ingredients on over-the-counter sunscreen and realized that it was all chemicals harmful to the environment and to my husband.  I started out making him medicinal, all natural sunscreen, bug repellant spray (he works up in the Palomar mountains) and expanded from there.  Our business is pretty much word of mouth.  We have a small but loyal group of customers who order from us on a continuing basis.  I grow some of my own herbs that I use in almost 90% of our products and what I don’t grow I order from organic suppliers.

555206_203826856421943_389738949_nStix N Bones is an artisan line of body lotions, face lotions and natural medicinal products.  All of our products are formulated with organic butters and oils.  We use essential oils for their medicinal properties in all of our products.

The name of our business, Stix N Bones, reflects our “back to basics” approach with all of the products we formulate.  We do not include any toxic chemicals in our formulations.

All in all, our products have been specifically designed for those who care deeply for their family’s well-being and health, who dislike products made with artificial additives and chemicals, and for those who want to be ecologically responsible. ”

Claudette Wilkins
Cavegirl Confections

Claudette“My earliest memory of being interested in cooking was watching my grandma cook, which also resulted in my first broken arm at age 3. I come from a family of food lovers, my family owned a restaurant in Guadalajara, MX which I spent most of my summers helping out at as a kid. Once my son James was born I decided to follow my culinary aspirations and I haven’t looked back since. Cooking is immensely gratifying to me it’s a labor of love. Feeding people and seeing their reaction is the reason I got into the business. After attending culinary school in San Diego I was fortunate to work for some amazing chefs. I learned so much while working in Fine Dining and being around such high quality and expectations helped inspire me even more about what I do and to always strive to be a better cook.

Cavegirl confectionsAfter two kids and a family history that didn’t agree with eating a lot of the foods I was used to, I wanted I made the choice to change. I started working out 5 days a week on my own and changed the way my household ate, and in 2011 I was introduced to CrossFit & Paleo Lifestyle. Cavegirl was just a dream I had and it finally became reality in 2013. My CF family at CrossFit Fortius in San Diego were the first to see Cavegirl come to fruition and I thank them for their amazing input and support! The product list continues to evolve and grow as the pursuit of making the products even tastier often spawns new items. Using the best ingredients I can find with organic coconut oil everything I make is as if I were feeding my family, small batches and lots of love. All Gluten/Grain/Dairy free of course.”

Kristi Lee Graham
True Pasture Beef

trifectalogo“Kristi Lee Graham has been raising cattle for more than 25 years. She formed Peace Love Beef LLC to sell her True Pasture Beef into San Diego. The beef you buy from True Pasture Beef are cattle that Kristi and her family have raised for the cow’s entire life. Kristi’s cattle are raised in one of two locations; either Central or Southern California. The ranches total over 5000 acres. She never uses
hormones and does not plant or till the ground. The grass the cattle eat is what grows naturally. Herbicides and fertilizers are never used on our ranches. The cattle fertilize the ground, and the ground feeds the cattle; just like nature intended.

If you are interested in getting True Pasture Beef, you can sign up to be a CSA member and get either 3 or 6 month of grass-fed beef delivered to your door.”

jeff corepointsJeff is a former Nationally Registered Paramedic who now operates a private acupuncture practice in San Diego, CA.  From a young age Jeff always had two passions; food and medicine.   After high school he decided to pursue medicine rather than the culinary arts.  His education in medicine led him to a Masters degree in Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine and post graduate certification in Classical Five element Acupuncture.  By incorporating Primal/Paleo/Perfect Health concepts into his private practice, Jeff has found a way to combine his love for helping people and cooking tasty food.  As part of his practice, Jeff shops with his patients and guides them in purchasing the most nutrient dense whole foods.  After shopping he will help set-up kitchens for Primal success by eliminating non-primal/paleo foods.  Once the cupboards are paleo-ized patients are then taught a few cooking techniques and even how to make a few staples for the Primal kitchen (clarified butter/ghee, paleo mayonnaise, chicken/beef stock, etc).

Dr. Alessandra Wall
Life In Focus

dr-wallI am a licensed clinical psychologist, lifestyle and nutrition coach at CrossFit Elysium and Marketing Director for the gym. I am also a mother, wife and currently on the board of directors for Empower Charter School, needless to say life is busy! I was first introduced to the Paleo diet in 2009 after the birth of my first son and to the principles of Primal lifestyle in 2010. My family and I have been Primal in our nutrition since 2009 and are currently working to integrate some of the other lifestyle principles of Primal living in our day-to-day life, which is how Life in Focus first came to be.

418588_3817162705734_2132873333_nI have been in private practice since 2006, but started Life In Focus in 2012. I shifted my focus from being primarily a psychotherapist to wanting to work with anyone who felt they needed more out of life, and wanted help reaching personal, health and emotional goals. This is something I was and am still personally working on, and I soon realized that knowledge or good intentions alone don’t always get you where you want to be.

The aim of Life in Focus is to help anyone achieve balance and restore a sense of control and purpose in their life, whether they need a psychotherapist or simply want a coach to help them achieve personal and dietary goals. I approach nutritional coaching from a Paleo or Primal perspective, and although lifestyle coaching is dictated by people’s personal goals, principles of balance, healthy living and authenticity are at the center of my philosophy. Through support, education, guidance and individualized attention every person can identify core values and needs, and subsequently learn to actively integrate these elements in their daily life. With the right kind of  help anyone is capable of achieving more balance and satisfaction.”

Stephanie McCormack and Trish Davis
Healthy Happy Fit Life

RCP20130502_021-copy-150x150Stephanie is the owner of Stupid Easy Paleo, a website devoted to simple and nutritious Paleo recipes, and the co-owner of Healthy Happy Fit Life, a nutrition and lifestyle coaching business. Her formal education in biology plus her 12 year career as a high school science teacher made her journey into helping others learn about the Paleo lifestyle an easy one. She is also a Certified Holistic Nutrition Practitioner and co-founded Healthy Happy Fit Life with Trish Davis in 2012.

ipad retina2 (1)Stephanie was introduced to a book called Paleo for Athletes in 2009, and took the plunge into eating grain-, legume- and dairy-free in early 2010. It quickly had a positive effect on her health and athletic performance, both in mountain bike racing and in CrossFit. Steph started her website, in 2011 and though she started posting recipes for fun, it didn’t take long before it became a passion, and the rest is history.

Healthy Happy Fit Life’s philosophy around transforming health centers around quality, nutrient dense foods – as well as having good sleep, managing stress and exercising. Our approach closely follows a Paleo / Whole30 template.

RCP20130502_031-copy1-150x150Prior to diving into health and fitness coaching, Trish began her career designing telecommunications and network systems for Navy bases and submarines around the world. After battling bouts of depression and watching her grandmother suffer a long and debilitating battle with Type 2 diabetes, Trish was driven to regain control of her own health and well-being.

After discovering CrossFit in 2007, she found the Paleo diet through Robb Wolf. After attending Robb’s CrossFit Nutrition Seminar, she began to integrate the Paleo diet into her lifestyle and quickly saw results with how she both looked and felt, as well as huge improvements with her performance at the gym.

HHLF_Web-Logo_2560x1440 (1)Trish believes that lasting lifestyle changes start with people uncovering what they really care about. She is most passionate when she is helping people discover for themselves why they care about being healthy and then working with them to make lasting positive lifestyle changes. In her extensive experience as a CrossFit Coach and gym owner, Trish has had the opportunity to help hundreds of people transform how they feel throughout the day, improve their quality of sleep and restore balance to their lives. This passion, along with her side-kick Stephanie McCormack’s skills in the kitchen, led Trish and Steph to join superpowers and create Healthy Happy Fit Life in 2012.

In addition to enabling people to live healthier, happier and fitter lives, Trish enjoys throwing heavy barbells over her head. She loves Olympic Weightlifting and a good CrossFit WOD.

Stephanie Greunke, R.D.

Steph(hi)-6“I am registered dietitian with a holistic approach to wellness.  I have a master’s degree in nutrition and health promotion, a certification in holistic wellness, and a personal training certification.  I sees patients locally in San Diego and around the world through phone and Skype consults.

My primary passion is women’s health focusing on fertility issues, optimizing health during pregnancy, and supporting women through their transition into menopause. I also work with athletes, those with food allergies, digestive disorders, and autoimmune conditions.  I believe in a real food approach and works to develop a plan that is unique for each individual.

I actually came into the Paleo world kicking and screaming.  I did not want to believe that what I was hearing about was true since it was completely against what I learned in school.  It took me awhile to let it all sink in, but the concepts intrigued me, so I dug into the literature.  I spent a full week investigating every and anything that I could find about the topic.  There were many late nights and tears shed after studying this diet template, but at the end of the day it just made sense.  The main scientific concepts that I learned in school were still there, but only one side of the story had been presented.

The most interesting part for me was that I was a vegetarian at the time that I learned about the Paleo diet.  After doing my research, I gladly had my first animal protein (a rare steak) and soon felt a sense of nourishment that I had not felt in years.  I now structure my nutritional consulting in favor of following the principles a Paleo template.”

Empower Charter School

empowerEmpower Charter School is doing something about the childhood obesity epidemic facing our nation. Our team is volunteering our time and resources to start a public school that integrates fitness and health into the education program. There are many studies that show a strong link between physical fitness and academic performance, yet many schools have cut PE. The CrossFit Kids PE program will bring a lot of fun into our students’ school day. In fact, we believe school should be fun and our teachers will facilitate learning through projects, group work, and topics students are interested in.

We will also offer a Spanish dual-language immersion program, where our students grow up learning two languages.  Writing and technology will be also be powerful tools to enhance our students’ learning. For example, students may blog about science or create video tutorials about math concepts.  Our strong language program will empower our students to become strong communicators and collaborators.

Empower Charter School has received a lot of support from the community. Help us start the first Empower Charter School, by making a donation to our start-up costs. You can see a detailed list of our start-up costs at
