Nik Hawks of Paleo Treats who lives and breathes Paleo will talk about how to make the transition from the theory behind Paleo and primal to living it daily. Nik and his wife Lee transitioned to Paleo eating in 2009 and have not looked back. They make it easier for the rest of us with their Paleo Treats, which are second only to fruit itself as a healthy.
3:30 – 4:15 Mobility and your body
Primal living goes beyond diet and addresses taking care of your body and mind. Courtney Kimpo is a seasoned yogi and mobility coach at CrossFit Elysium. Dress comfortably or come ready to take notes because she is going to walk you through a series of stretches and moves to help with overall mobility and flexibility.

“During my career I investigated a broad spectrum of health care providers, from purveyors of back room “miracle” cures to the most respected of medical doctors (some of whom were doing very unrespectable things). To say that some of the activities that even “top” doctors are up to are shocking would be an understatement. Let’s just say these insider experiences quickly convinced me of the importance of taking preventative wellness measures to avoid the need for later medical “care.”
Fortunately, my investigations also involved many wellness-focused, non-MD professionals. So oddly enough, it was my role with the FDA that introduced me to the concepts of natural eating and healing. Now, there are certainly a lot of nefarious snake-oil sellers out there, don’t get me wrong. But there were also many reputable wellness-based professionals with alternative healing approaches that helped me rethink what I thought I knew about being “fit.”
It was then that I realized that my skills as an investigator could be used to finally find the missing link between popular fitness programs and natural healing, the “X” factor needed to really lose weight and be healthy in the long term… and within the broken systems of today’s food supplies and healthcare.
Thus the seeds of the Primal Power Method were sown. In my spare time I began my study of wellness and holistic healing in earnest.
It was, for a while, a dual life. By day I investigated dietary supplement fraud for the FDA, by night I studied the benefits of genuine, high-quality supplements. At work I saw how a misguided public is duped by the food industry, corporate marketing and even the government. So I used my professional skills as an investigator to scour medical journals and scientific research to find the missing piece in the nation’s wellness equation.
The questionable practices I witnessed in my previous FDA work inspired me to found New American Nutrition and create the Factor X program. Now, instead of quietly documenting all that goes wrong with our nation’s food and supplement supplies, I am proactive and talk about health and the positive aspects of quality supplements.
Instead of relying on muzzled investigators of a federal agency, I want everyday Joes and Janes to make informed decisions based on information that has, until now, been routinely hidden from public view.
The Primal Power Method is clearly a primal-based approach. Additionally, it includes the stance that everyone is physiologically different and therefore has unique dietary requirements. There are no one-size-fits-all answers.
Every “expert” book seems to have a different way of addressing […] personal dietary sensitivities. It gets very confusing, and it doesn’t have to be. “My earliest memory of being interested in cooking was watching my grandma cook, which also resulted in my first broken arm at age 3. Jeff is a former Nationally Registered Paramedic who now operates a private acupuncture practice in San Diego, CA. From a young age Jeff always had two passions; food and medicine. After high school he decided to pursue medicine rather than the culinary arts. His education in medicine led him to a Masters degree in Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine and post graduate certification in Classical Five element Acupuncture. By incorporating Primal/Paleo/Perfect Health concepts into his private practice, Jeff has found a way to combine his love for helping people and cooking tasty food. I am a licensed clinical psychologist, lifestyle and nutrition coach at CrossFit Elysium and Marketing Director for the gym. I am also a mother, wife and currently on the board of directors for Empower Charter School, needless to say life is busy! I was first introduced to the Paleo diet in 2009 after the birth of my first son and to the principles of Primal lifestyle in 2010. My family and I have been Primal in our nutrition since 2009 and are currently working to integrate some of the other lifestyle principles of Primal living in our day-to-day life, which is how Life in Focus first came to be.
I have been in private practice since 2006, but started Life In Focus in 2012. I shifted my focus from being primarily a psychotherapist to wanting to work with anyone who felt they needed more out of life, and wanted help reaching personal, health and emotional goals. This is something I was and am still personally working on, and I soon realized that knowledge or good intentions alone don’t always get you where you want to be.
The aim of Life in Focus is to help anyone achieve balance and restore a sense of control and purpose in their life, whether they need a psychotherapist or simply want a coach to help them achieve personal and dietary goals. Healthy Happy Fit Life
Stephanie is the owner of Stupid Easy Paleo, a website devoted to simple and nutritious Paleo recipes, and the co-owner of Healthy Happy Fit Life, a nutrition and lifestyle coaching business. Her formal education in biology plus her 12 year career as a high school science teacher made her journey into helping others learn about the Paleo lifestyle an easy one. She is also a Certified Holistic Nutrition Practitioner and co-founded Healthy Happy Fit Life with Trish Davis in 2012.
Stephanie was introduced to a book called Paleo for Athletes in 2009, and took the plunge into eating grain-, legume- and dairy-free in early 2010. It quickly had a positive effect on her health and athletic performance, both in mountain bike racing and in CrossFit. Steph started her website, stupideasypaleo.com in 2011 and though she started posting recipes for fun, it didn’t take long before it became a passion, and the rest is history.
Healthy Happy Fit Life’s philosophy around transforming health centers around quality, nutrient dense foods – as well as having good sleep, managing stress and exercising. Our approach closely follows a Paleo / Whole30 template.
Prior to diving into health and fitness coaching, Trish began her career designing telecommunications and network systems for Navy bases and submarines around the world. After battling bouts of depression and watching her grandmother suffer a long and debilitating battle with Type 2 diabetes, Trish was driven to regain control of her own health and well-being.
After discovering CrossFit in 2007, she found the Paleo diet through Robb Wolf. After attending Robb’s CrossFit Nutrition Seminar, she began to integrate the Paleo diet into her lifestyle and quickly saw results with how she both looked and felt, as well as huge improvements with her performance at the gym.
Trish believes that lasting lifestyle changes start with people uncovering what they really care about. She is most passionate when she is helping people discover for themselves why they care about being healthy and then working with them to make lasting positive lifestyle changes. In her extensive experience as a CrossFit Coach and gym owner, Trish has had the opportunity to help hundreds of people transform how they feel throughout the day, improve their quality of sleep and restore balance to their lives. This passion, along with her side-kick Stephanie McCormack’s skills in the kitchen, led Trish and Steph to join superpowers and create Healthy Happy Fit Life in 2012.

“I am registered dietitian with a holistic approach to wellness. I have a master’s degree in nutrition and health promotion, a certification in holistic wellness, and a personal training certification. I sees patients locally in San Diego and around the world through phone and Skype consults.
My primary passion is women’s health focusing on fertility issues, optimizing health during pregnancy, and supporting women through their transition into menopause. I also work with athletes, those with food allergies, digestive disorders, and autoimmune conditions. I believe in a real food approach and works to develop a plan that is unique for each individual.
I actually came into the Paleo world kicking and screaming. I did not want to believe that what I was hearing about was true since it was completely against what I learned in school. It took me awhile to let it all sink in, but the concepts intrigued me, so I dug into the literature. I spent a full week investigating every and anything that I could find about the topic. There were many late nights and tears shed after studying this diet template, but at the end of the day it just made sense. The main scientific concepts that I learned in school were still there, but only one side of the story had been presented.
The most interesting part for me was that I was a vegetarian at the time that I learned about the Paleo diet. After doing my research, I gladly had my first animal protein (a rare steak) and soon felt a sense of nourishment that I had not felt in years. I now structure my nutritional consulting in favor of following the principles a Paleo template.”

Empower Charter School
Empower Charter School is doing something about the childhood obesity epidemic facing our nation. Our team is volunteering our time and resources to start a public school that integrates fitness and health into the education program. There are many studies that show a strong link between physical fitness and academic performance, yet many schools have cut PE. The CrossFit Kids PE program will bring a lot of fun into our students’ school day. In fact, we believe school should be fun and our teachers will facilitate learning through projects, group work, and topics students are interested in.
We will also offer a Spanish dual-language immersion program, where our students grow up learning two languages. Writing and technology will be also be powerful tools to enhance our students’ learning. For example, students may blog about science or create video tutorials about math concepts. Our strong language program will empower our students to become strong communicators and collaborators.
